Happenings First Annual

WSCAI Kickball Tournament a Success!

Greg Floyd

The ice melts over a display of Gatorade and water as the beaming sun shines through on this perfectly sunny Wednesday afternoon. The four team captains, representing the four corporate sponsors, fearlessly led their respective teams into battle one fateful August afternoon. To the victor goes the spoils! That is, the infamous and soon to be coveted kickball trophy now proudly displayed in the offices of Barker Martin. Ok ok, perhaps a bit of a dramatization.

But by all metrics, I think it’s safe to say the first annual WSCAI Kickball event was a resounding success. The event was held on August 1st, and it was, indeed, a perfect afternoon for it. Four teams of 10+ players joined up at Meadowbrook Playfield Park for an afternoon of fun in the sun. Four teams play two games each in a single elimination style tournament. The two winners then battle it out for the fore-mentioned trophy and bragging rights. The other two – a round in what’s known in some circles as the ‘losers bracket’. Perhaps I was in the former, but we need not dwell on past wounds!!

The event was equipped with coolers filled with refreshments (provided by sponsors), team colored t-shirts as a keepsake, umpires for both fields, and of course a photographer to capture the best moments right before folks haul off and boot a large plastic ball awkwardly! And of course, I would be remiss not to mention the partnership with Mary’s Place wherein sports equipment was donated/collected to ensure the same fun we’re having is spread to those in need.

Afterward, the group heads for some well-deserved R&R at the local Wedgwood Ale House & Café right down the road. A spirited place with ice cold drinks and great pub food. Surely some business was discussed. But more importantly, great laughs were shared. Personally, I recommend their burgers and a pilsner. It was the perfect ending to a fun afternoon.

Continued on page 12 Congratulations to the winning team!
