rowing up as a military brat with duty stations in the U.S., Europe, and Southeast Asia—eight schools and

eleven neighborhoods—meeting new neighbors was routine. I like getting to know people and their life experiences.

More than twenty years ago, I developed a routine of walking a 1-mile cloverleaf of sidewalks twice a day. This immediately connected me with like-minded neighbors and offered opportunities to either walk-and-talk or stop-and-talk with them. This connection remains in present day. My community  creating the sense of isolation from the outside world, yet feeling a physical closeness within the neighborhood.

In my Association, over a third of current residents are original owners. We love where we live, and we treasure the local and regional amenities available here. For the most part, our Association is adept at self-governance, and has minimal disruptions within the community. As a result, selling agents tend to take the approach of “less is more” when communicating HOA information to prospective buyers. Although our Association’s rules are relatively basic, there is a high expectation of compliance with them. Our CC&R’s formation and history create Q&A informational opportunities—even among original owners. It’s important for prospective new owners to do advance homework and understand what living in an HOA or COA means.
