President’s Message Alicia Graham, CMCA, AMS, PCAM, Chapter President

I’m on a jet plane off to CAI National in Washington DC with several of our local members; the Chapter’s Executive Director Michelle Leary and your President-elect, Karen McDonald, CMCA, AMS, PCAM, RS. This year’s conference is titled “We the Community.” When you stop for a moment and think about what we do for a living and/or where we live, this year’s title rings true.

Community associations are exactly that, a community—even if it doesn’t feel like it sometimes. Owners, residents, Business Partners, community leaders, management consultants, all working toward a common goal—rowing in the same direction. Common interests. I can’t help it; the stuff makes me giddy! I can’t wait to return to share what I experience/learn with my peers as well as my clients.

According to CAI National “Community associations increasingly are being called on to play a significant role in the way we live, learn, work, and play. We believe the community as a whole—with its unique mix of cultural identities, socioeconomic backgrounds, religious beliefs, and more—represents the truly physical and cultural reality of today’s world.” I couldn’t agree more. When we purchased our first home, the VERY first question I asked in a panic was, “is this home part of an HOA?” I was shocked that I was disappointed when I received the response of “no, it is not.” I guess everyone wants to feel like they are part of a community.

After spending nearly the last 20 years of my life engulfed in community association management,

I’ve realized that the

communities that we manage, work side by side with and/or live in influence the world we live in . . . including but not limited to: technology enhancements, public policy, lifestyle management and cultural diversity as well as cultural inclusion. It always has been and always will be the biggest fascination in my life that so many different folks, of differing backgrounds/beliefs/perspectives can for the most part, come together to live in multi-unit dwellings and be creative/innovative/thoughtful in an environment that could be chaotic for a variety of reasons.

What a busy, busy, BUSY spring . . . (and now almost summer) we are having. If you’ve been paying a little attention, you’ve heard that the Washington State Legislature approved WUCIOA. It’s a complex Act that will apply to new community associations effective July 1, 2018. I hope that you were able to catch one of the updates at the South End (Tacoma) Law Day or the North End (Lynnwood) Law Day in April. It is quite a bit of information to digest, don’t fret if you did not, there will be many other opportunities to hear about WUCIOA, how it may affect your community and how it changes the landscape of community association management

going forward. I personally want to thank the Legislative Action Committee (LAC). The volunteers have worked diligently for so many years in partnership with WSCAI’s Lobbyists, Kathryn Hedrick and Krystelle Purkey as well as the bill sponsor, Senator Jamie Pedersen. It’s a brand-new world we live in!
