President’s Message Alicia Graham, CMCA, AMS, PCAM, Chapter President

I am so thankful it’s June. Aren’t you? With Summer Solstice on June 21st (specifically at 3:07am on the West Coast) we can all enjoy light after late-night board meetings, evenings on the deck enjoying the sun and a bit more family time which we all need. Being this CLOSE to summer (if you’re a native you know that summer doesn’t officially start until July

5th) the rain, although good for landscaping, gets tiresome!

Karen McDonald, Michelle Leary and I are now back from the 2018 CAI Annual National Conference & Exposition held in Washington DC. We are reenergized with information from our networking endeavors and Karen is ready to start the preparation process to lead WSCAI in 2019. The Chapter will be in capable/hardworking hands when I hand the gavel to her in November. Good things are coming!

The 2018 CAI National Conference had a few award-winning keynote speakers. Specifically, Cam Marston’s session was titled Leadership in a Distracted World. The session explained how our society has formed generations whose communication styles and priorities vary greatly and how leaders must work differently with each group to stay focused on achieving our goals. The session was a great reminder to slow down and remember that not every owner/resident in our communities uses and appreciates the technology demanded by many. The lead story in this issue, “Staying Connected with the Generations,” written by Sarah Hoey, CMCA, AMS who is the Executive Director for Issaquah Highlands Community Association, is a great reminder of just that. Sarah writes “ . . . (we) must bring people together across the generations and diverse populations to build community . . . Don’t we all want these things for ourselves regardless of age?” That we do Sarah, that we do!

Speaking of Summer . . . yes, I’m seeing how many times I can say “SUMMER” in my President’s message because I hope that it will actually arrive earlier rather than later! Check out the great articles on the importance of properly installed air conditioners, landscaping for water diversion (especially important for those of you with communities with extensive landscaping) and some fun barbeque stories with SUPER tasty recipes. We also have a non-summer themed article on the Business Judgement Rule. If you’re like me, you can always use a refresher on that topic.

Have a great start to your summer (see I did it again!) and I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event!
