The Water Cooler: Tips for New DCs “How can a Doctor keep up with all the research out there?”

“I’ve only been out of school for a few years and already feel disconnected.” Robert Perkes, DC

A young DC recently asked me this while we were out eating lunch. He had recently purchased a practice and was just starting to feel the time crunch being the boss entails. He was always trying to stay up on the research and be one of the “good” chiropractors. I laughed and told him that after 12 years in practice that I couldn’t keep up either. Then I shared with him a way to stay up to date and get CE credits for it.

Monthly meetings with a few chiropractors to go over local happenings and present a new research article or clinical gem every month can meet your CE needs. Make sure to print extra copies of the articles and sign and date them as a group so you have documentation.

I invited him to our small group but you can start your own. We started as a few friends and expanded from there. It gave me a local referral group where I could ask questions and get real answers.

Choose somewhere to meet that has space and is reasonably priced. It isn’t important to reserve a room if the place isn’t usually too busy. A table for 10 is probably more than enough space.

Call and invite local DCs to get together a month in advance. Make sure to follow up the week before to remind them of the

time and location. It is important to keep the location and time consistent. Let people make it a habit and get it on their calendar.

We try to get together the second Monday of every month because that worked for us YMMV (your mileage may vary). Start a text thread from the group that shows up and you can more easily get the word out every month.

Make sure to have a good presentation set up for your first meeting to set the tone and standard for future meetings. Decide who will present at the next meeting before you leave. They are then committed to come to the next meeting. Just like that, you’ve just got yourself a group.

The easiest resource to find good articles is the Internet. Get creative with your search terms and you can find great articles. We have had success with old issues of industry magazines for creative clinical gems.

With a little work, you will have quality CEs and a great group as a practice resource. And if you need help organizing such a group, the WSCA can lend a hand. Contact Jeff Curwen at wsca@chirohealth.org or 206.878.6055 to get started
