In Good Company: Leah Shockley, CPA Turning lives around

L

eah Shockley, CPA, a controller for 180 Medical Inc. in Oklahoma City always knew what she wanted to be when she

grew up. “My answer was accountant,” Shockley said. “My mother kept one of those school assignments that ask, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ Accounting was even my favorite class in high school.” But her first home was not in corporate finance. Shockley tried her hand at public accounting with BKD LLP and HSPG and Associates.

What made her make the switch from public accounting and auditing to the corporate world? “Accounting and finance can, at times, be routine professions.

However, here at 180 Medical, I have been routinely challenged and had consistent change – which I have enjoyed immensely,” she said.

Te positive work environment Shockley loves is powered by a commitment to customer satisfaction, community involvement and a winning corporate culture – the company was founded in Oklahoma City in 2002 and has been chosen as one of the Best Places to Work in Oklahoma for nine years running. “180 Medical has a great working environment because it has

great people who are hardworking, compassionate and caring,” she said.

Te OSCPA met with Shockley at the 180 Medical offices to learn more about her.

CPAFOCUS: What book could you read over and over? Shockley: None. I’m an avid reader and usually read a book a week but I don’t like to read them twice.

CPAFOCUS: What is the weirdest thing you ever ate? Shockley: Tat is difficult to say as I love trying new and different foods. Most likely it would be Hoom Kufteh which is an Armenian raw beef and onions dish.

CPAFOCUS: What is your favorite thing that you own? Shockley:My farmhouse is my favorite thing I own. It just fits my personality.

CPAFOCUS: What food can you absolutely not get enough of? Shockley: Squid! I just love it.

CPAFOCUS: What is your biggest pet peeve right now? Shockley:Emails! I have been told I might be a bit of an “email Scrooge” when it comes to unnecessary emails.

CPAFOCUS: What’s something nobody knows about you and they would be surprised to find out? Shockley: I love mowing the lawn. It is a great way to destress and enjoy the outdoors.
