JIM SMALL CPA, CGMA

TO WHOM MUCH IS GIVEN, MUCH WILL BE REQUIRED. – LUKE 12:48

GREG HANGER, CPA, HAS HIGH PRAISE FOR FELLOW CPA JIM SMALL. “A few individuals you meet in your life set the bar as high for excellence as Jim,” Hanger said. “Very few in my life have impressed me with their sincerity and never-ending effort to reflect the best example of a professional, friend, citizen and certified public accountant.” Small, an OSCPA member for more than

40 years, has led professional ethics courses for the OSCPA, the Tulsa Chapter of the OSCPA and other organizations too numerous to count—even for a CPA. He’s served on the OSCPA’s Continuing Professional Education, Nominating and, of course, Professional Ethics Committee. He has shared his insight for CPAFOCUS and earned both the Gold and Silver Pen Awards for his efforts. Additionally, he is active with Asbury

United Methodist Church, serving in hospitality, divorce support and singles ministry, and he is the president of Southridge

Estates Association, a position he’s held for six terms. Small is currently a senior accountant for

active with the OSCPA Tulsa Chapter, serving multiple leadership positions, including Tulsa Chapter Auditor, CPE Committee Chair and Tulsa Chapter Historian. Deanne Nunn, CPA, a sales tax auditor for

the Oklahoma Tax Commission, said, “From the first time we met, I knew he was the type of CPA who was dedicated to the profession in a big way…I’ve called on him many times during my career for guidance on ‘What would Jim do?’ questions. Jim is always eager to help another CPA, no matter what the reason.” Small’s professional courtesies for his peers seems to be his theme. Steve Milam, CPA, PFS, owner of Milam & Associates, PLLC in Tulsa, said, “He is always happy to help!”

What hobbies are your favorite? Cooking and baking for others is a favorite pastime for me and I love to try and modify recipes. I entertain friends and strangers in my house on many major holidays.

What luxury would your dream house have? A four car garage/shop with an adjacent man cave complete with kitchen and full bathroom

What book could you read over and over? “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie

Milam added, “Jim has been a friend for over 20 years and has been an important factor in his guidance to me, fellow CPAs and everyone around him.” Hanger agreed, saying, “Despite his long period of service, he has never grown tired of being a cheerleader for the CPA profession. He has always been a mentor, friend and inspiration to me and countless others.” Small does not take his role lightly. “Being

a CPA is a calling and an obligation,” he said. “Your CPA credential is a valuable key to help you open the doors during your professional career. Turning the key in the locks and progressing through the doors will expand your professional and personal horizons. “Be proud of the profession you have chosen and show the public your feelings through words and deeds.”

What food are you a gourmet chef at making? I’m not a gourmet, but I am constantly trying new foods and watching cooking shows.

Is there anything you wish you could do that you feel you are pretty bad at? I am not a very good dancer in spite of taking lessons in line and country dancing, but I keep trying.
