PHIL BROCKHAUS CPA, CGMA

THERE WAS NEVER A NIGHT OR A PROBLEM THAT COULD DEFEAT SUNRISE OR HOPE. – BERNARD WILLIAMS

SPENDING 50 YEARS IN A PROFESSION IS ONE THING. SPENDING 50 YEARS WITH ONE COMPANY IS UNHEARD OF. Yet Phil Brockhaus, CPA, CGMA, is on the cusp of such an achievement, having joined Oklahoma City firm Peters & Chandler in 1971, a feat not unnoticed by others. Ronnie Richards, CPA, a shareholder with Peters & Chandler, said “Phil has spent his entire accounting career with the same firm, helping the firm survive and thrive through the years. What a great example to professionals of all ages!” Brockhaus, the principal shareholder and managing partner, joined the firm after graduating from the University of Oklahoma with his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. However, as astonishing as that is, Brockhaus has been a member of the OSCPA just slightly longer. During that time, he has served on the Continuing Professional Education Committee (for 30 years), Peer Review Committee, Planning Committee, Budget & Finance Committee and the Educational Foundation. Te past chairman is also the first—and current—chairman of the OSCPA Past

Chairmen’s Council. Te Norman native also gives back to his community. He’s a 1991 graduate of the Norman Leadership Class and has served as chairman of the Norman Parks & Recreation Board, as treasurer for the Norman Firehouse Art Center and as treasurer of the Norman Softball Association. He’s also lent his talents to the Oklahoma Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Oklahoma City Lawyers and Accountants for the Arts and to the Board of Directors of the Catholic Archdiocese of Oklahoma City. His generosity comes as no surprise to those who know him. Christy Sughru, CPA, a sole practitioner in Edmond, started working at Peters & Chandler soon after she passed the CPA exam. “My life would never be the same

thereafter,” Sughru said. “Early on in my career at Peters & Chandler, Phil encouraged involvement with the OSCPA. I do not know if there was ever a time Phil was not volunteering someplace in the community, with the OSCPA or the AICPA. He has given so much of his time to others.” “While working at the firm, Phil became an amazing mentor to me,” she added. “Phil

My career would not be what it is without his stellar patience, encouragement, wealth of knowledge and numerous business connections.” Richards agreed with Sughru, saying, “He is and has been successful and well respected for his business prowess, community involvement and mentoring to new CPAs, including myself.” Brockhaus, a 2017 Oklahoma Accounting

Hall of Fame inductee, is currently serving as the chair of the Board of Advisors for the Steed School of Accounting at the University of Oklahoma, a position Richards said, “allows him to impact the paths of OU accounting students and future CPAs.” Brockhaus, however, says all CPA successes

are generally the results of group efforts. “We all need to remember and respect what

our fellow practitioners have gone through and accomplished for us in the past that have made things easier for us now as we do our thing,” Brockhaus said. “It now falls on us to do the same for the practitioners who will be following us.”
