to attend CAI-OC’s CLTP series, I recommend becoming familiar with the Association’s governing documents (CC&R’s, Bylaws and Rules). But my #1 tip for new board members would be to listen and learn…especially  be impressed with how well you speak, your fellow board members and homeowners will be more impressed with how well you listen. • Schedule time to meet with or talk to your community manager prior to the meeting. We are here to help. Doing this will help you better understand the Association you are now representing, and you will now be prepared to present those great ideas!”

“Make sure that you have a copy of the Association’s governing documents and take some time to read through them. If something seems unclear, ask your Community manager to clarify so that you’re well informed.”

“My advice to any potential candidate or aspiring new board member would be to attend at least one to two board meetings prior to the election to gain a feel for the how the meetings are conducted and what the current and pending issues are for the community. Not only will this allow them to better see what they are signing up for and adjust any expectations accordingly, but it also allows for a more seamless transition of board members.”
