ATSU-MOSDOH Update CONTINUED FROM PAGE 40

The 79,000-square-foot facility houses 93 dental chairs and currently is equipped to provide general, specialty and urgent care dental services, with special needs oral health services to be available soon. While clinic operations are supervised by Affinia Healthcare, ATSU-MOSDOH develops and manages the educational curriculum for third- and fourth-year dental students. Together, the partners are developing community-based dentists who will improve the overall health of communities within Missouri and across the U.S.

During the first year of treating patients, students are able to get first-hand experience with the patient-centered aspect of oral healthcare. For many of the students, providing care to those in need is what initially led them into dentistry.

“I’ve been around dentistry my entire life, and I’ve seen how much of an impact you can have on someone’s life by changing their smile,” says Kalleb Greene, D4. “That’s what made me go into dentistry.”

Each patient experience is a reminder of the importance of good oral health. As students rotate through the clinic, community members continue to express how thankful they are to have access to the clinic’s services.

In July 2016, ATSU welcomed Dwight E. McLeod, DDS, MS, as ATSU-MOSDOH’s dean fol- lowing the retirement of Christopher Halliday, DDS, MPH, who served as the University’s inaugural dean since June 2012. Dr. McLeod, a former professor for Southern Illinois Uni- versity’s School of Medicine and chair for the Department of Applied Dental Medicine and section head of Periodontology, is confident the unique partnership between ATSU and Affinia Healthcare is fulfilling the University’s mission.

“The exceptional dental experience that the students are receiving defines the partnership because our students address the urgent and comprehensive dental needs of the underserved in St. Louis City and the neighboring communities while mastering a challenging dental cur- riculum that is contemporary and evidence-based,” says Dr. McLeod.

A new class of 42 third-year dental students relocated to St. Louis in June 2016, while mem- bers of the inaugural class finish clinical rotations in St. Louis and begin external rotations in 19 CHCs across Missouri and various states. These centers are located in Wisconsin, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arizona and four other sites affiliated with the Indian Health Service. During this time, students continue to engage in community outreach activities by providing dental care and oral healthcare education, which is an integral part of the students’ education.

Many exciting events remain on the horizon for ATSU-MOSDOH and its students. Beginning Sept. 30-Oct. 2, 2016, students will participate in mock board examinations through the West- ern Regional Examining Board. This will mark the first time any dental school in the country has been provided this important learning opportunity. ATSU-MOSDOH also will prepare for its April 2017 CODA accreditation site visit and the School’s June 2017 inaugural commence- ment ceremony.

“The crowning moment will be when ATSU-MOSDOH honors the inaugural class of 42 proud, energetic graduates who will go on to make a difference in their respective communi- ties,” remarks Dean McLeod. f
