other dentists and our citizens in all items pertaining to dentistry—for the good of our profession as well as public safety.

Why do you want to be President of the MDA?

We will be facing many future challenges as an organization. I would like to see the MDA continue to grow and serve our membership.

What unique skill sets do you bring to the candidacy of President Elect?

As a periodontist I’ve had the pleasure to work and communicate with a variety of dentists every day. I have become a good listener. I’ve been active at the state and lo- cal society level for quite a while and enjoy interfacing with my fellow colleagues across our great state.

Legislative advocacy affects many aspects of the dental profession. What do you believe is MDA’s role in the political process? How do you envision improving our advocacy efforts?

The MDA needs to be actively engaged with our state and federal legislators on all issue related to Dentistry and small business. We need to encourage members to contribute to MODentPAC. Legislative Day is a great event that we should consider growing. “Grass- roots” was a fine buzzword from the ’90s that still holds truth. We need to encourage each member to be an advocate for dentistry to their constituent legislators.

The MDA just went through its Strategic Planning process, and as a part of that, we’re looking strongly at our efforts directed to recruitment and retention of members, espe- cially new dentists. What do you feel is most important for the Association to be doing to communicate the value of membership and what do you personally plan to do to speak to this as president?

Component societies need to take the lead not only to meet, but truly engage, new members to develop solid, long-lasting rela- tionships.

What are you most excited about for the dental profession? What are you most worried about?

I am excited to see how the impact of the HPV vaccine will have on future reduction of head and neck cancer. Many great minds are working diligently in labs and clinics de- veloping new technology and techniques to treat and cure the various dental diseases. I am most worried about those outside of

dentistry attempting to dictate how, when, where and who can diagnose and treat dental disease.

Complete these statements: A casual friend would not know that … I originally was em- ployed as a carpenter.

A perfect day is … BBQ after watching another Husker football win at Table Rock Lake with family, friends, and my Labrador Retrievers Murray and Bobby Knight. Sounds cliché, but the one thing that makes me most happy is to see my wife, Sandy, laugh. f
