ADA House Recap CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE

Resolution 3: Various policy adoptions and amendments were approved. These changes can help assist states in advocating for effective policies within regulatory and legislative arenas. Such policies included Anesthesia Coverage Under Health Plans and Provisions for ERISA Plans. Find policy information at ADA House, Supplemental Information, 2021 Unofficial Actions of the House of Delegates (bit.ly/adahouseinfo).

Resolution 86: A priority item for the House was the Comprehensive ADA Policy State- ment on Teledentistry. With laws across the nation varying in guidance, the ADA House determined to keep its policy simple, clear and concise with very little change. Find pol- icy information at ADA House, Supplemental Information, 2021 Unofficial Actions of the House of Delegates (bit.ly/adahouseinfo) and an ADA News article, “Teledentistry policy amended to align with Code of Ethics” at bit. ly/3CjdOvGs.

ADA Installs New Officers

Dr. Cesar Sabates of Coral Gables, Florida, took office October 16 as the 158th president of the ADA—be- coming the Association’s first Cuban-American president. Dr. George She- pley was elected president- elect. He chaired the ADA Budget and Finance Com- mittee, Standing Commit- tee on International Accreditation and the Council on Communications, among other roles. Read more at bit.ly/3HypBKg.

Resolution 53. The ADA New Dentist Chair who serves on the ADA Board of Trustees was added as a voting member of the Board and also will be installed each year by the President or President’s designee before the ADA House of Delegates.

Resolution 94: The ADA House consists of delegates from each state and one alternate for each delegate. The ADA House referred

back to the appropriate committee to con- sider an addition of allowing two alternates for every delegate position. The premise be- hind this request was to bring more members into an active role in ADA governance. Addi- tionally, some states have larger delegations and some very small delegations; it was felt having the ability for more than one assigned alternate would create more interest and a pipeline for members into ADA leadership.

Resolution 95: Mental health matters for dentists was addressed. The House moved to have the appropriate agency of the ADA, in conjunction with mental health consultants, analyze the availability of resources to sup- port the mental health of dentists and collect information regarding existing health and wellness programs from across the tripartite and other professional organizations, includ- ing but not limited to the American Medical Association, the American Student Dental Association and the New Dentist Commit- tee. Resources in this area will be explored for best practices for effective mental health and wellness campaigns, suicide prevention resources and more.

Because three are better than one, mark your calendars for October 13-15, 2022, when the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston will host a trio of annual meet- ings, including ADA SmileCon 2022. The Texas Dental Association Meeting and the Greater Houston Dental Society Star of the South Dental Meeting are combining their meetings with SmileCon, bringing three large dental conferences under one roof. All organizations involved are partnering together to consolidate the number of dental trade shows and to create a more impactful event for attendees and exhibitors. The ADA has a long-standing policy that encourages state and local societies to work with the ADA as the annual meeting (now known as SmileCon) travels to cities around the coun- try. Details will be shared at SmileCon.org in early 2022 and registration will commence in early summer. f
