Awards and Recogniio MISSOURI DENTAL ASSOCIATION

The MDA Awards banquet is hosted each year in conjunction with the House of Delegates. It’s a special event where pride in the profession is on center stage—especially this year as the MDA celebrated its 150th anniversary. In addition to recognizing members who’ve served on the Board or have reached milestone years of membership, the event honors members for their contributions to the dental profession and their community—this year through the Distinguished Service and Dentists of the Year awards, and a Presidential Citation. We thank all award recipients for their efforts on behalf of the dental profession and Missouri citizens, as well as those who attended the banquet —member colleagues, family and friends—to honor the work of these individuals and of the collective membership.

Dentists of t Year DR. MATT NIEWALD, DR. DOUGLAS WYCKOFF and DR. MARK ZUST

The MDA Dentist of the Year award is designed to recognize a member dentist who has demonstrated outstanding service to the Association, to the profession of dentistry and/or to the community in the past year.

Three dentists were jointly named the MDA Dentists of the Year—Dr. Matt Niewald, Lee’s Summit; Dr. Douglas Wyckoff, Cameron; and, Dr. Mark Zust, St. Peter’s. All have general dental practices, and all are no strangers to demonstrating leadership in their dental associations. They have served their local societies extensively, are past presidents of the MDA and all three have served in various, national leadership positions with the American Dental Association.

This year, Missouri dentists faced a challenge with Delta Dental of Mis- souri. The challenges dealt with elec- tion processes and bylaws operations, and if Delta was acting in compliance

with these. After many weeks with no resolution, these three den- tists filed suit to bring about a fair and transparent process, which did occur as a result of their initial efforts.

These dentists demonstrated outstanding service to the Associa- tion, the profession and the community, proving to members that organized dentistry and its leaders are willing to take action when necessary to ensure that third party payers provide transparency in their processes and that providers are treated fairly and communi- cated with honestly.

When asked to comment on their participation, they all agreed they were “just doing what they felt was the right thing for the profession” and further, that they felt positive progress was being made in communications and relations between Delta and its pro- vider dentists since the lawsuit and subsequent events.

Distinguished Service DR. JAMES MCGIVNEY

The Distinguished Service Award is designed to be presented to a member with a long history of exemplary service and dedication to the dental profession and organized dentistry.

Dr. James McGivney, a retired general dentist in St. Louis, was named the 2015 MDA Distinguished Service Award win- ner. Dr. McGivney’s long dental career is especially highlighted by his commitment and dedication to forensic dentistry.
