Two MDA Members Receive ADA Certificate for International Volunteer Service

T

he ADA Certificate for International Volunteer Service recognizes ADA members who have volunteered in develop- ing countries to improve the oral health and overall health of individuals. This year, two MDA members were recognized: Dr. Janet Ruopp, Cape Girardeau and Dr. Mark Ortinau, Ellisville.

Dr. Ruopp has been providing dental services in Croix de Bouquets, Haiti for the last four years at the Haitian American Caucus in conjunction with the Zonta Club of Cape Area. She says to date they have seen more than 1,700 patients, and provide dental exams and cleanings, oral hygiene instruction and fluoride varnish for the 300 school children they see, as well as extrac- tions. “It is a most rewarding way to give back thru your profes- sion,” says Dr. Ruopp.

Dr. Mark Ortinau says his latest mission trip was to Gjakova, Kosovo, and that he has been going to this same location for the past 16 years. “I have made about 30 trips there,” he says. The sponsoring organization is Service International/ St. Louis Family Church in Chesterfield. “We provide a comprehensive range of dental care, including restorations, extractions, endodontics and periodontics.” All the work provided is done free of charge.

The ADA has released its first set of practice management guidelines, a new member value for dentists. Managing Patients is the first module in the Guidelines for Practice Suc- cess, which will eventually include a series of practice management modules developed by the ADA with input from dental practice management consultants and content authori- ties. This is a member-only resource that dentists can access on the ADA Center for Professional Success website at http://Success.ADA.org/gps using their member login. The ethically-based guidelines include information on how dentists can improve their patients’ experiences along with tips on managing the administrative and business side of their practices. Topics range from patient intake, where dentists can learn how to handle a patient’s first visit and tips on designing a reception area and decorating an office, to how to create cancellation policies and handle specialty referrals. The module also covers treat- ment recommendations and patient relations. Future modules will include Managing … Finances, the Dental Team, Marketing, the Regulatory Environment, and Technology.
