Images displaying insects, birds, fish, mammals ... A wild or domesticated member of the great animal kingdom.

FIRSTPLACE

BREAKFAST SHAD DR. JACK BACKS

GENERAL PRACTICE HERMANN (SIU 89)

This image of a Ring-billed Gull was taken at August

Busch Memorial Conservation Area. These birds over-winter at the largest lake. It was an

early November morning with calm water and the winter brown foliage reflecting off

the surface. This was the best image of a 15-shot sequence of the bird diving for a fish.

SECONDPLACE

BIRD’S-EYE VIEW DR. SAINY ADEL, GENERAL PRACTICE, LEE’S SUMMIT (UMKC 19)

In the early 1500s, the old town of Cartagena, Colombia was the main port of entry to South America and its sought-after gold. Through history, many tried to enter through this port to occupy its land, however the wall built by slaves was impenetrable. The wall still stands today, lined with old cannons, encompassing the historic city. The Great-tailed Grackle, common to this region, is standing on that wall with the modern skyline of Cartagena in the distance.

HONORABLEMENTION

ONCE A PUPPY, ALWAYS A PUPPY DR. MAICE SCOTT, PEDIATRIC PRACTICE, COLUMBIA (UMKC 09, CO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL 11)

I took this image of my 13-year-old cocker spaniel this fall at our home in Columbia. My husband and I originally got him as a puppy when we lived in Kansas City, just before my second year of dental school.
