The second area is artificial intelligence and machine learning. Computers are incred- ibly good at managing and evaluating data. Having systems that analyze radiographs and suggest areas that doctors need to examine already exist.


We may, in the not too distant future, see a system advise a doctor that a crown is needed on tooth #3, understand via the digital schedule when that patient is treated, iden- tify the scanned tooth the moment the scan is completed by the digital intraoral scanner, and automatically design and mill the crown with little-to-no user intervention. Doctors still will (and should) approve and agree to all suggestions and make changes where ap- propriate, but our clinical lives will become much more streamlined. That will allow us a greater opportunity to relate and communi- cate with our patients.
