(CPO) assigned to each facility. Professional swimming pool management companies can provide a CPO to work at the facility. This certification teaches government requirements on pool management, pool and spa water chemistry, testing, treatment, filtration, and maintenance practices.

Swimming pool plumbing, heaters, pumps, electrical and other technical equipment will need repair. The Illinois Department of Public Health may require permits for repair or installation of the equipment. IDPH requires all permitted work be completed by pre-qualified architects, engineers and contractors. Professional pool management companies carry this qualification and should handle extensive repairs or have a network of qualified professionals to complete the tasks in a reasonable amount of time. Pool repairs can be quite costly depending on the scope of work. Associations may need to have a reserve for pool facility maintenance.

Lifeguards

Lifeguards play a vital role in risk management and maintenance of pool facilities. They not only ensure rules are understood and followed, but they actively monitor swimmers and are trained in emergency response, rescue and care. Professional swimming pool management companies train their lifeguards in water rescue, basic first aid, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) using a nationally recognized certification program. Starguard of the Starfish

Aquatic Institute, American Red Cross, and Ellis & Associates are nationally recognized certification programs. Training onsite staff allows management to evaluate the quality of training lifeguards receive and determine how well the safety program is implemented. Professional companies will perform in-service training which includes on-going skill education throughout the summer to help lifeguards and onsite staff retain and improve knowledge.

Lifeguards are available to follow through on policies such as enforcing safety breaks and clearing the area when severe weather is near. Maintenance duties can be performed throughout the day depending on the volume of pool users. Staff members are available to meet local health department representatives for compliance visits and are onsite to intercept emergencies of mechanical equipment.

Time and money are necessary to manage risk and maintain a swimming pool facility properly. By forming a close working relationship with a professional pool management company and taking proactive measures to ensure the pool is safe, clean and staffed, the weight of the tasks can be minimized. Finding the right pool partner for your association takes the stress right out of any game of Marco Polo. Being able to offer a happy and memorable summer pool experience to the community’s residents is well worth the undertaking.
