REUNITING A DIVIDED BOARD By CAI Staff writer

Serving on a community association board, or working with one as a manager or other professional, can sometimes be an amazing feat in and of itself. The true challenge usually appears when you have an association board of directors that is divided and resembles the person magically sawed in half… though often these boards are unable to pull themselves together again as effortlessly as the magician at the end of his trick.

An association board of directors is a group of people elected or nominated who jointly oversee the activities of an association and are responsible for running the business

of the association. When a board performs as it is meant to, the outcome is a camaraderie of members and a well-run association. Dysfunctional boards, on the other hand, will often fail to make good decisions and the association may suffer as a result.

How do you know if your association’s board of directors is dysfunctional? Read through the following questions and consider whether they apply to your particular board:

• Do board members show up to meetings unprepared or unwilling to make a decision?
