associations to attend these events has been an ongoing effort from the staff and hundreds of CAI volunteers. The education provided is well received, offering topics that vary from month to month focusing on major issues that affect community association living. We are happy to say that in 2013, the DCAL education program was created. DCAL stands for Dedicated Community Association Leader. This is a category of volunteers that is made up of community association board members and homeowners.

How does this program work? Over the course of 24 months, a volunteer member (nonmembers are welcome to attend as well) will take a series of 7 courses that focus in these areas:

The purpose of these courses is to educate volunteers in operating their community association like a business. Six of the courses are two-and-a-half hours in length and one is four hours in length. All of the courses are offered in class and CAI Illinois is working toward offering these courses online via webinar. We have two courses that are available as a webinar as of October 2014.

CAI will proudly recognize the participants that have completed all seven courses within a 24-month period with the DCAL Participant Recognition name badge, a certificate of completion, recognition in the Common Interest Magazine and they will also be announced at the CAI Conference & Expo.

Volunteerism is rewarding; a very fulfilling gift of a person’s time, resources and personal energy.

At times,

being a volunteer is extremely satisfying. Other times, it can be a drain on their resources. Volunteers are not paid monetarily, however it is said that they are paid through their heart. Regardless, the effort of a volunteer is something that should be rewarded, whether at a one-on- one level or even higher level through formal recognition, awards and acknowledgement. CAI strives to recognize the volunteers that dedicate their time, expertise, and passion for their community on all levels. The DCAL Program is one of the ways the association acknowledges these special individuals for their efforts.

Success can be measured. In the past 18 months, CAI Illinois has hosted ten DCAL courses with two remaining

courses scheduled for 2014. We have twelve volunteers that are on track to receive their DCAL Recognition within the next twelve months and three participants that received their recognition in September. This is just the beginning.

What does this mean to you? Maybe you’re considering the DCAL course for yourself or even for a board member and/or homeowner. Is there a busybody or a know-it-all that makes association members roll their eyes at the board meetings? Education in a professional setting sometimes enables these volunteers to put their passion into a structured setting offering them the skill to succeed. Possibly there is a volunteer that has proven loyalty, trust, and shown effective leadership skills within your community that deserves recognition as well. Regardless of the nature of the person, an organized education program that fosters fact based curriculum will empower volunteers to run effective meetings and run their associations like a business all while fostering enduring relationships; a true success to the community association living lifestyle.

As we live our busy lives, there’s one thing that is constant: the need to feel accomplished and acknowledged. CAI Illinois has multiple programs that cater to volunteers, business partners, property managers, and their companies providing opportunities to offer advice, share knowledge, and also recognition in your profession. The success you achieve is yours to measure. CAI supports every member fully and strives to recognize all accomplishments at every opportunity. Our members are our success!
