answer period that could have taken place at any property, the board president seemed ready to wrap it up.


Then, it was suddenly election time. Who knew? No candidate names were announced, no names were read into the record, and the floor was not opened for nomination of candidates. The president said, “So, we pretty much have the same slate of candidates, except Mary will be the secretary.” One guy in the audience said, “I move, I second and you’re unanimously elected. Congratulations.” I sat in shock trying to process this less than transparent process. Perhaps seeing the look on my face and knowing my profession, the president looked at me and said, “Oh wait, I forgot to ask if anybody else would like to volunteer for the board. Anybody?” There were no such volunteers. I couldn’t quite get any words past the gurgling sounds in my throat.


So the annual meeting came to a close. The association members all picked up their chairs and started back to their respective homes. My neighbor turned to me and asked what I thought about the meeting. I said, “I think we just ran an illegal annual meeting.” I couldn’t bear the thought that my happy little home might not just be improperly governed, but governed by fools. A lack of professionalism is one thing; ignorance that results in illegal procedures is an entirely different matter. Here ye all men now know… I think it’s time to get involved in my homeowners association. Darn my foolish heart.
