Working, baby-sitting, homeschooling — just another day at the office


Well, I’m settling into my new office and job — and so are the children! I thought Lane would be in school by now but instead he is sitting at an extra desk doing homework on his school-issued Chromebook. That’s how it will be for at least the first nine weeks as our local schools figure out how best to teach in this age of Covid. My little one, Oaklyn, is enjoying going to work with Mommy most days but her favorite spot to play with her tablet is in my chair — right behind my butt! This works out OK until she decides she wants a little more room and starts slowly easing me out of my seat. I’ve set up a toy box behind my desk with some of her favorite


dolls. This is her little cubby hole with a blanket and pillow where she can hang out and play. Visitors to the office can’t see her from the door, but the little-girl chirping from behind my desk is unmis- takable. I’ve learned to tune it out as I try to talk to callers about ad- vertising pricing or taking subscription orders. You mothers out there can relate — sometimes our kids are like an extra appendage — we don’t even notice them. Until they get tired and whiney. Then it’s good to have a great-grandma — “Nana” — close by who enjoys entertaining the toddler for awhile. Although working with a couple of children underfoot can be a

little distracting, this job does have its advantages. Like being able to wear a tee-shirt and sweatpants to work (like in these photos that Dad insisted on taking).
