What do you do when you have dewormer resistance? You can change to a more potent member of that dewomer class (Valbazen®, Prohibit® and Cydectin® are the most potent member of their classes). We can change to another class of de- wormer (i.e., if one has been using Pro- hibit®, change to Cydectin®). If we have the barberpole worm, we can use copper oxide wire particles. (See ATTRA at end of article). Animals can be grazed on Sericea lespedeza (or other tannin containing plants such as birdsfoot trefoil, sainfoin or chicory). Animals can be grazed on browse, where they do not pick up infective larvae from grazing close to the ground. Animals may be rotationally grazed where they are moved every 5 days and pastures have at least a 40-day rest period.

Another tool is Bioworma®, a fungus that is fed (spores) to the animal where they grow in the fecal pellet and consume worm larvae to help reduce pasture contamination and subsequent infection with worms (it won’t kill worms in the goat).

Another solution is to use dewormer combinations. However, when using combi- nations you MUST use selective deworming (5-point check) or you will develop resist- ance in a short period of time to all the de- wormers in the combination. Two-way dewormer combinations are

WHAT IS FAMACHA?

FAMACHA is a selective treatment method for controlling the level of parasitic barber’s pole worm among domesticated small ruminant pop- ulations. In contrast with earlier, more aggressive approaches, under FAMACHA only certain sheep or goats in a flock are selected for treatment. Selection for treatment is based on the degree of anaemia the animals are displaying in their mu- cous membranes, which is as- sessed through a color guided chart.
