’RANCHER RAMBLINGS

It’s been a busy, exciting first year at the Goat Rancher office

August marks the one-year anniversary that I have been at Goat

Rancher and I must admit it has been the fastest year of my life — and one of the most challenging and rewarding.

Fortunately Dad is still here most days and handles the news side of the business — even as he talks about “retiring” some day. I handle the circulation, billing and bookkeeping and — most

importantly — the advertising sales. That has been the biggest chal- lenge because advertising is what pays my salary! Luckily Dad, Miss Mary and Uncle Leslie had built a loyal clientele of advertisers that I get to visit with on a monthly basis. It has been rewarding and a pleasure to work with the industry leaders that we get to promote on a regular basis.

The challenge has been reminding ranchers, equipment dealers and service providers that Goat Rancher still provides a valuable service to the meat goat industry. We reach the people they want to reach every month — and we’ve been doing that since 1996! Yes, we charge for advertising space, but there’s a lot of free

stuff we offer. We don’t charge for press releases, calendar listings, sale reports or ad design.

And if you’re advertising a production sale, you can pay the in-

voice after the sale with no penalty — even if that’s a few months down the road. Dad puts on production sales, too, and he says that’s important.

The bottom line is we’re here to help in any way we can. We’re goat producers, too, so that gives us a unique insight to the goat busi- ness. In fact, the Goat Rancher office is located in the middle of a goat ranch!

I know I talk a lot about “business” sometimes, but for us the

Goat Rancher is also a lifestyle. I get to work on the same ranch where I have grown up the past 26 years. I can bring my kids to work with me — or if they’re sleeping late they can walk down the road to the office later.

I’m self-employed so I can take a day off if I need to — or if I

just “want” to. The flip side to that is I’m self-employed so there is always something that needs to be done. It seems that monthly dead- line comes around quicker and quicker. I do want to thank everyone who has offered me advice and en- couragement over the past 12 months. I appreciate the new friends and business acquaintances that I’ve made and look forward to meet- ing many more of you in the future. n
