FODDER FOR THOUGHT

2011 Nationals showed that winning genetics no accident

I didn’t make it to the American Boer Goat Association Na- tionals this year — only the third show I’ve missed since 1996. In the early days the big Texas breeders dominated the showring, but I remember in 2011 one Eastern breeder took the spotlight before a na- tional audience. In 2011 Roger McSwain of RM Ranch in Cherryville, N.C., re- ceived justifiable praise as his genetics claimed several titles at the national show held in June in West Monroe, La.

In my article at the time I wrote: “Many times, flukes, accidents or just a unique shining star takes top honors, but this year, genetics that have proven themselves in the show ring year after year reached a pinnacle and proved what many long-time breeders have been say- ing: These goats are no accident!”

The proof is in the ability to pass on winning genetics genera- tion after generation.

McSwain was the breeder of the 2011 National Champion Full- blood Buck — RM 50 Sugar Rey — a yearling buck who was owned by David Chillon of Webster, Fla., and Ana Stewart of Southwest Ranches, Fla. Sugar Rey’s sire, RM 745 “Hank”, was the Grand Champion Please see FODDER, Page 11
