Work. Life. Balance. I can’t think of a more loaded topic. I think people often look for a schedule of sorts, or some key tips they can implement that get them to the Holy Grail of Work Life Balance. Maybe it’s shutting off the laptop at a certain time, holding off on responding to email until later in the day, some sort of creative work spreadsheet, or scheduling that uber important weekly date night with your spouse. Maybe if we make dinnertime with the family mandatory or limit talking about work during off hours. How about strategically scheduling PTO to take care of important life needs monthly? What if I introduce the idea that finding the right balance encompasses none of those things? Not that each of those techniques won’t be a part of your eventual routine, they just aren’t the foundation blocks of balance.

Work Life Balance isn’t something you schedule or force. The intent should not be to balance life focus with an equal amount of work focus. The intent should be to create a life inclusive of work, love, play, and relaxation that can promote balance for you in the long term. In order to do that let’s break down the foundation blocks that we need get us there.

Step 1: Become Self Aware. Everything starts with Self Awareness. Before we can remotely begin to design our intended best life, we need to be clear with ourselves as to who we are in detail. What is is that we actually want? Do we even know? Is it wealth, time, companionship, progress? What are we good at and where do we struggle? Beginning the process of designing your best life without clearly understanding who we are and what our end goal would look like is obviously not going to work. Now here’s the cold water. You have to be HONEST with yourself. Take your past performance or lack thereof as the primary indicator or of your skillset and get to work
