Gears By Caryn Smith • Editor T

his issue of Automotive Recycling magazine, you’ll notice, ushers in a fresh page design, following last issue’s change up of the cover and logo. As the official international publication of the ARA, our mission is to guide professional automotive recyclers toward best industry practices. With the reveal of the new ARA logo in 2018, we felt it was time to reflect the changes happening in the organization and in the industry here, as well. Your ARA member publication reflects the profession- alism for which you strive. We chose bold colors and fonts, opened up simplified page layouts for visual interest, and as always, add in interesting supporting graphics to reflect this dynamic industry. While change is evident in both the ARA and in the business environment of auto- motive recycling, there is great opportunity to those willing to take the lead ... and the risk. Our focus will continue to highight that potential to provide our readers per- spective and ideas that can benefit their business strategy. We will continue to face issues in the marketplace head-on, offering readers various viewpoints to gain insight to navigate change with information. Finally, we always appreciate the grassroots insight of our expert columnists, who share their forward-thinking views. Ultimately, we want to be the go-to pub- lication that provides thought-provoking editorial content – in a well-designed format – to challenge, educate and pro- mote industry that provides quality recy- cled auto parts to the marketplace. One way we do this is to provide auto recyclers a place to share their story and expertise. If you have a story to tell or ideas to share with your industry colleagues, please email ARAEditor@comcast.net. We are especially interested in legacy sto- ries of recyclers who have stood the test of time through decades and generations.

Our focus will continue to highight potential opportunity to provide our readers perspective and ideas that can benefit their business strategy.

It is unique to find an industry where so many leaders are willing to share their suc- cesses and failures so that others may rise to their full potential. This issue is no dif- ferent; it is chock-full of great insight from some very accomplished auto recyclers. On page 30, our newest contributor, Maura Keller, a seasoned writer in all- things recycling, interviews several premier full-service auto recyclers who share their best practices for a “Full Service Tune-Up.” On page 38, you will read ideas from the flip-side in “Self Service: What Makes It Profitable.” We assembled veterans and next-gen leaders of self-service to share ways to get the most from your inventory. One notable veteran of the industry, Herb Lieberman, recently retired. He wit- nessed real change in his 62-years of both independently-owned and corporate run auto recycling. His story begins on page 46. Finally, an article to note on page 51 explores the real results gained through the collaboration of SCADA, ARA’s Affil- iate Chapter, and their work with govern- mental authorities to crack down on illegal operators in their state. This story shows the power of an organization to make an impact for the good of professional auto recyclers. Please share this story with your legislators to validate your industry and your professional standards.
