n the summer of 2019, undergraduate theater students at the University of Central Florida (UCF) received an email that would expose them to an entirely new way of thinking about theater...and puppetry. Through the Israel Institute’s Visiting Artist Program, theater director, puppeteer, and performer Ayelet Golan would travel from Israel to teach “Introduction to Puppetry and Object Theatre.”

“They were only offering it this semester and never again,” recalls undergrad student Kendall Krueger. “I thought, this is exactly what I want to take.”

“The first day shaped what the class really would be,” shares fellow undergrad Lauren Calhoun, whose twin brother, William, also took the class. “Ayelet asked us ‘What do YOU think puppetry is?’ Then we took the pen that we used to write our notes, and it became our first puppet.” Born in Jerusalem, Ayelet comes from a long line of literature and theater teachers. She directed her first show in high school, then went on to teach Hebrew to immigrated soldiers as part of the Israeli army. “After the army, I volunteered with the Tevel b’Tzedek organization to teach theater in a village in Nepal,” explains Ayelet. “It was really an interesting experience. First of all, not to teach in my own language… and then to create a show based on their lives in the village.”
