“I enjoy sitting around the trailers in the evening and enjoying a meal and a beer together. I love everything about the western lifestyle, from home furnishings, to clothing, and the people who make it up.”

It’s no surprise that clothing makes Shelly’s top list of western favorites. She is seen by many of her fellow rodeo wives as being one of the best dressed women on the road. Something else that comes at no astonishment is Shelly’s humble answer when hearing that she’s received such praise. “I honestly don’t feel like I am all that fashionable,” she shyly says.

While we appreciate her modesty, we beg to differ. Even after losing all her luggage on an incoming flight to the Pendleton Round-Up this year, Shelly still managed to show up to the performance in style, donning a leopard duster, turquoise bolo, booties and denim skinnies. The outfit pulled together all of the components she considers to be her fashion staples—a good pair of boots, a little leopard-print, turquoise, and denim. “Denim is a style must have, for me. Whether its a pair of jeans, a denim shirt, or a dress—denim always fits the occasion and never goes out of style!” Shelly notes that a person does not have to spend money in order to dress their best self. “I feel like a simple top, a good pair of jeans, and some jewelry can dress up just about any outfit. I think that style can be something that you bring out from the inside, with personality and confidence.” While many may look up to Shelly for her fashionable ways, she has a few women of her own who she considers as go-to’s for style advice. “If I ever have a fashion emergency, I usually call Lee Bland-Lee and get her opinion or advice on something.” One of Shelly’s favorite outfits that she has worn is from the 2018 NFSR.

“I wore a black jumpsuit, Miss Macie booties, and concho belt. It was a simple outfit, but sometimes those are what stand out most. I might even wear it again this year,” she jokes. As one can imagine, going into this year’s NFSR, outfits aren’t necessarily on Shelly’s mind as much as they have been in the past. Instead, she is focused on the moment when Rocky and Cole step into the Kansas Star Arena together for the first, and possibly last time. “The other day someone asked Rocky if he'd rather do well or see Cole do well. He said that he'd rather see Cole do well—and I honestly believe that is the truth. I think Rocky will be a nervous wreck this year with Cole being there. Cole is 13th and Rocky is 8th. That many spots in between them will allow Rocky to get in the box with Cole and help him; but then Rocky will have to turn around and get himself ready. This is Rocky's 25th year (and probably last) and Cole's first, so it's going to be very special for our family."
