GO BEHIND THE SCENES WITH THE RODEO WOMEN OF BUCK FERGESON DESIGNS

G

od. Family. Rodeo. Fashion. Repeat. While these may be the words used to describe every member of the family who was raised under the guiding principles of legendary patriarch Buck

Fergeson, these words also apply to Buck Fergeson Originals—a legacy of art, love, and the compassion of a God-fearing man. Buck Fergeson Originals, located in Bellville, Texas, is still owned and managed by second and third generations of the Fergeson family. When she was no longer able to work in the store, Buck’s wife JoAnn took over the management role and was later joined by her daughter Kerri. Today, Kerri’s daughter Lynette has joined the store management team, and Lynette’s sister Brenna provides fashion insights as she travels the rodeo trail.

Behind the Name Buck Fergeson spent the first 25 years of his life following in his father’s footsteps as a rodeo cowboy. Working in the off-season as a ranch hand, truck driver, and oilfield roughneck, he never had any formal training in art. He put numerous hours into his sketch pad, pencil and carving knife to hone his skills—and while his first love was woodworking—with consistent prodding of friends and family, he ventured into the artistic fields of clay, wax and bronze sculptures. This eventually led to gold and silver sculpted jewelry pieces, as well.

A proud Gold Card, or lifetime member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), Buck is also a lifetime member of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. For seventeen years, he made the bronze sculpted trophies that were presented to the champion bull rider, tie-down roper, steer wrestler and barrel racer. On February 10, 2001, Buck was deservingly inducted into the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame.

The Buck Fergeson Originals store initially opened in Bellville, Texas,

to sell Buck’s bronze sculptures, jewelry and other originals. The store has changed a bit over the years as the following generations have added their own styles and flare. Buck was honored that his family would take on his store and that the doors didn’t close when he was no longer able to manage it. Not only does the store have western artwork by Buck, but now holds a ladies clothing line, a baby line, home decor, and is decorated with the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) back numbers and winnings

of Rowdy Parrott—married to Lynette—and Caleb Smidt—married to Brenna. Rowdy is a two-time WNFR steer wrestling qualifier who finished 12th in the 2017 world standings and Caleb is a two-time PRCA World Champion in tie-down roping.

“Buck would be pleased with who we married and the life we live,” says Lynette.

A strong Christian man, Buck could often be found reading his Bible at home or giving Godly advice to those who crossed his path. He lost a daughter, Cheryl, at the young age of sixteen, and he found comfort in his faith in the Lord by remembering through the darkest times that there is hope and Heaven. Although he passed away in February of 2010, his steadfast belief in the Lord would come in to play as a display of Godly- faith when tragedy would again strike his family in the fall of 2018. On November 3, 2018, Buck’s grandson, Will Byler, and his bride Bailee

Ackerman Byler, were killed in a tragic helicopter accident when departing from their wedding. At the worst of time, the family leaned on Buck’s faith in the Lord. Holding signs that read, “God is good!” at the WNFR that December in support of Caleb, who would not only win round one of the WNFR, but would also go on to win the World Championship title in tie-down roping.

A Business of Passion If you’re looking to shop at Buck Fergeson Originals, be prepared to be welcomed into the family! If you’re open to try anything on, the wonderful women in the store are more than happy to help you find the perfect outfit—EVEN if it’s pushing you to try something that you never would have considered wearing before. Customers always leave the store loving the items that they found and feeling confident. More often than not, they’ll come back for additional clothing to match their newfound style!

“I would say that papa was more of the art behind the business,” explains Lynette. “He had a motto for enjoying what you do and letting your passions shine through in your business. “Papa left a legacy of western art, staying true to what we love and want to showcase to people, and keeping God first through everything,” Lynette added. “Keeping God the center of anything and everything that we do in business, family, our products, what we are producing and the content that we are sharing.”
