Animals in Circuses and Exhibitions: Legislative Update Gearing up for State Legislative Sessions in 2019

here are 99 state legislative chambers across the county (the number would be 100, except the state of Nebraska only has one legislative chamber). According to
Ballotpedia.org, 87 of the 99 legislative chambers have regularly-scheduled elections this year for a total of 6,070 seats, meaning that nearly 82 percent of all state legisla- tive seats are up for election this November. Once the dust has settled after the November election, it is a good opportunity to check and see if you have a new state representative or state senator for your district. Every state has a website with a “Find My Legislator” option, where you can enter your zip code to find out who represents you at your home or business address. For animal exhibitors and circus and fair operators, this is also the time to be aware of when next year’s legislative sessions begin. For your reference, the

Please note that the term “prefiling” means the date leg- islation can be introduced, even if the legislative session has not officially convened. The prefiling option is a useful tool for legislators in states where the legislative session is very short. As pre-filing dates approach and legislative sessions begin in 2019, we will continue to monitor and respond to any state legislation that will impact the fair and cir- cus industry.
