Yavapai Humane Society Equine Center

by Miriam Lucero A

month ago I met Dr. Luciane Berg, Equine Initiative Direc- tor, and Horse Health & Training Specialists for Yavapai Humane Society Equine Center. Most people in Yavapai County are familiar with the Yavapai Humane Society pet adoption center and low cost pet vet care in Prescott. On

June 4, 2016 Yavapai Humane Society Equine Center opened their gates in Chino Valley, AZ.

Meeting Dr. Luciane Berg and taking a tour of the Yavapai Humane Society Equine Center has been a delight. Dr. Berg is a naturalwith horses; her training of horses began about 40 years ago in Louisiana. She left a career in higher education at the Louisiana State Universi- ty to accept a position as Equine Initiative Director. Her love for hors- es and the West made the decision easy. Having a great quality of life in Arizona and training horses full time meant the world to Dr. Berg.

Some of Dr. Berg’s training techniques on getting a new horse in- cludes a buddy system. Put the new horse with her two horses. This way the new horse has some comfort, and learns the ropes easily. If she is giving baths, she will put the new horse in the middle between her horses, and bathe inadvertently; it really calms them down. When she starts riding the new horses, she begins by ponying with her horses and then slipping back and forth while riding.

Dr. Berg offers classes on equitation, how bits work, and colic talk. $25.00 for a 4 week class. The horses are adopted about a month after arriving at the center. Dr. Berg works to match the right horse with a new owner, by personality and skill set. She also goes to the home of the new adopted owners. The horses stay about a month with a new owner before adoption is finally approved. Dr. Berg also performs a home check of a horse owner before the horse is brought to the center. Most of the horses coming in are from owners that can no longer take care of their horses. Other horses have behavioral is- sues and the owners want to surrender their horse rather than sell it.

The Appy that you see in the pictures was 450lbs heavier and was in a 10x10 stall for 3 years. Dr. Berg worked with the Appy to get his weight down, bring up his social skills, and get him to socialize with the other horses. The Appy is 13 years old and has never been ridden. Dr. Berg is working with the Appy under the saddle now, and he will be available for adoption. Some horses may take longer than 30 days to train and adopt.

The facility is immaculate clean, and the horses have plenty of room, great stalls and turn out areas. Dr. Berg has a volunteer staff, and she resides on the property so the horses have greater security and a friendly face to address their needs.
