I’ve said it before.

I love SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. For many reasons. The cast, yes. I got to work with William Sadler on a movie called MELVIN SMARTY, which was amazing working with him. SHAWSHANK is such a beautiful movie. And I’m a big believer in redemption in general, and redemption I believe is crucial to any good movie. Without it, what’s the film’s takeaway?

I enjoy character actors, Stanley Tucci, Stephen Tobolowsky, Steve Buscemi, and Paul Giamatti are my favorites. You have acted with Paul Giamatti, in “John Dies at The End”, what it is like working with Paul Giamatti? Are there particular character/ roles you prefer to play?

When I learned I was doing a movie with Paul Giamatti, I lost it. I mean. How cool is THAT. We got to do Sundance together when JDATE pre- miered there in 2012. And I had a blast. We all did. Clancy Brown and Glynn Turman and Chase Williamson and of course Don Coscarelli.

I enjoy playing characters that speak to me. Not only to me, but hope- fully to other people too. To tell a story that hopefully inspires, or touch- es someone. Damaged characters, working towards redemption. It may sound “heady” but it’s true. I feel there’s a lot of pressure generally, playing a “perfect” character. But if the character is flawed, like we all are, you are granted a bit of a reprieve I feel like, to own it more, to imbue it with you, your own neuroses perhaps, your own idiosyncrasies. To make it that much more true. It’s more fun, it’s deeper, and it’s more cathartic. It’s more honest. But on the flip side, comedy is a heck of a lot of fun. It doesn’t all have to be serious! I like doing both.

Rob Mayes, you have a new movie “The Road Home for Christ- mas” on Lifetime airing soon. Would you share with our readers your character, and the synopsis?

October 26! I’m looking forward to this one! It’s a road trip music Christmas movie with Marla Sokoloff and Marie Osmond. We hit the road in NOLA and head up to my character’s hometown of Akron, Ohio (not far from my actual hometown of Cleveland) and a whole bunch of fun stuff happens along the way. We may or may not stop off in Nash- ville? It’s sweet and endearing, I hope, and fun and honest. I had a blast working with Marla. She’s a dream to work with. I can’t remember the last time I had that much fun working with a co-star.

Rob Mayes, you have a Western movie “A Soldier’s Heart” releas- ing later this year. Tell us about this movie, and did you ride?

I did ride! And I damn near fell off the horse on a full lope downhill being flanked closely by two others on horseback. Story for a different time. But needless to say, I didn’t need much coffee that day, which sure as hell woke me up pretty good.

I’m proud of this film. It’s a western. It breathes. Mike Feifer my di- rector allows the film to breathe and didn’t cut it up and make it snip- py and condensed. It’s shot beautifully. Val Kilmer is great in it. Jake Busey, Annalynne McCord. Great great cast. Mike really let me go for it and make this character of BRIGGS my own. And I’m super grateful to him for giving me the call in the first place and for really trusting me with the character on set. Some of these scenes were like 7 pages long. I really hope you can see it soon.

Rob Mayes, you’re a busy man, and just released three new country songs, Closer, Road with No Lines, and Kiss the Night. What is it about Country music that you enjoy? Would you share who the songwriters are on these three songs? What did you learn about Country music in Nashville, which you didn’t know before?

The story. The story within the song. The story behind the song. The harmonies. The truth. Pedal steel is my favorite sound in the world,

I wrote CLOSER with Ryan Rossebo and Kevin Leach, ROAD WITH NO LINES with J Michael Harter, Evan Williams, and Kevin Leach, KISS THE NIGHT I wrote alone while filming in Utah last August, MY HEART IS BLEEDING I wrote alone, WE’LL SEE that I just released I wrote with my good buddy Smith Curry and Lauren Weintraub.

Nashville has been very welcoming for me, and I’m so appreciative of that. I love the city. I love the people. I love the craft and the humility. It’s a special place, Nashville, with a very special kind of music. I’m bless- ed to be a small part of it.

Rob Mayes, you’re performing at The Big Sting, It’s A Country Thing Country Music Weekend in Prescott, AZ Oct 10-13, which night are you on? What can our readers expect from a Rob Mayes live performance? Any special guests?

Yes! I’m really looking forward to this. I play Saturday night, I’m pretty sure. What can you expect? You can expect me to give you the most honest show I can muster :)

Scenario: A new role is being created on Yellowstone, and you receive a call, to help co-create a character? What type of char- acter/name and synopsis would you create?

I’d bring my alter ego Branson Forbes to life. He’s got a mustache, ya know. Bit of an outlaw. And you might have guessed it, he’s on a mission to seek redemption.
