Don’t Cry for the Horses by LAUREN C. EBERT • photography by LAUREN C. EBERT E

very August I have a standing appointment to photograph longtime Friend and Client Dawn Vissers new foal crop. Showing up to the shoot was a wheelchair bound woman with an oxygen max and a glowing spirit that beamed beyond her physical limitations. A wise old cowgirl named Penny smiled up from her chair and introduced herself.

Years ago Penny was an Employee for Dawn’s farm Khemostar Arabians, and the keep- er of the farm’s beloved Arabian mare KS Asadds Joharra (aka JoJo). Penny and Dawn laughed together over the countless memories of Penny riding and showing JoJo. Now suffering with the end stages of COPD Penny made her way to see her dear friend JoJo one last time. And I was there, camera in hand.

Watching in awe as JoJo smelled the air and nickered to her longtime friend I felt the first of what would become several tears well up in my eyes. Do horses ever really forget their people? I don’t think so. I bit back tears as Penny’s loving husband lifted her bareback onto the mare she loved so much. A joy she is unlikely to ever experience again this side of Heaven. The bond between the two gave me pause and it was profound. Lord willing I have years ahead of me but I know that when I go, when my time is near, I hope someone does me the kindness of letting me hug my best friend just one more time.

A POEM

Don’t Cry for the Horses You know I’ll always ride here even when my riding’s done

In the whisper of the pre-dawn or the burst of final sun

At the corners of transition where the changes are obscured I will ride and if you see me its because of our love endured

You know I’ll never leave you even when I am far away in the moments when the words stop and your breathe gets in the way

I will softly say I love you barely louder than the breeze So I hope you gently listen to my voice between the tree you know I’ll try to hold you

even when my arms can’t grasp the feelings that we share here

will transcend just what we see and my horse will still be waiting right beneath our favorite tree

You know you are forever but it’s easy when you’re here just a hand away from holding and a hug away from fear

So you have to make a promise that your hope will never run right beneath our favorite tree
