PRIOR TO BREEDING SEASON Proper care of breeding bulls will improve the fertility and percent calf crop in your herd. Te pre-breeding period, two months prior to the breeding season, is essential for preparing bulls for success. Items to consider during pre-breeding: • Allow for an adjustment period if bringing in a bull to a new environment. Purchase bulls at least 45 to 60 days be- fore the breeding season. Tis gives the bull time to adjust to new surroundings and to recover from stresses involved in sale or transportation. It also provides enough time to find another bull if the purchased bull lacks breeding po- tential or fails the BSE.

• Conduct a breeding soundness exam. A BSE should be per- formed annually on each bull about 60 days prior to the start of the breeding season. Tis allows time to recheck or replace bulls that fail. Do not use a bull that fails a BSE. Be- cause the breeding potential of a bull can change over time, BSEs should be conducted on a regular basis.
