prepared for their career after completing an internship. In addition, according to a 2014 Atlantic Monthly article, internships on a resume are the num- ber one thing employers are looking for when hiring. Internship sites who participate in our program report almost 80% of students in paid internships     for the students and the venue.  

Consider asking the intern for employer and/or faculty references. Set the ground rules with an intern, and help them to understand your expectations during the hiring process. Do not assume the student will

have learned or appreciate typical full-time worker behaviors. Even those with experience will need to be reminded what your site requires in terms of dress, behavior, timeliness, and communication. The purpose of an internship is to help them understand what is expected in the typical work environment. Taking the time up front will often limit embarrassing moments later.

Kimberly Mahoney, Ph.D., CVP, is assistant professor in the College of Business Sport Management Depart- ment, and Gil Fried, J.D., is professor - chair in the College of Business Sport Management Department, both at the University of New Haven.
