Employers offering apprenticeships will also have opportunities for tax credits and can take advantage of the government’s encouragement for students to consider apprenticeship training instead of college. “By participating in this program as an employer, you help ensure your people are fully trained across the board,” continues Myers. “You can also feel confident your apprentices are well-rounded across all competencies.” It helps that the materials provided through the NALP apprenticeship program are essentially a complete training guide—so it will also allow businesses to ramp up their training in general. “You’re provided with exactly what to cover and the re- sources that are needed to support that,” Myers explains. “That will help your business to either create a training program or to beef up what you already have. In turn, we believe that will make you a desirable employer to new recruits. Businesses that are involved in an apprenticeship program are naturally going to be more appealing to industry candidates who are looking for great career opportunities.”

While this program is undoubtedly beneficial to partic- ipating companies and individuals, Myers says that she sees it as a great benefit to the industry as a whole, too. “The Landscape Management Apprenticeship is an opportunity for the green industry to produce more well-rounded workers—and that benefits everyone,” she says. “I think a lot of apprentices will choose to remain with the company that has invested in them. Hopefully, that loyalty and employer-employee connection will become an increasing norm for contractors participating in the program.” “Plus,” Myers adds, “the apprentice program has the capability of elevating the perception of the industry as a whole. As the industry continues to produce better trained workers, it ultimately benefits everyone.”
