H


ow do you become the best? You learn from the best. That’s the concept that supports the structure of an apprenticeship. Of course, the word apprenticeship might conjure images of a young worker learning from a blacksmith or from the local shoemaker—studying to one day be at the top of the trade. After all, apprenticeships date back hundreds and hundreds of years. But although an apprenticeship is a centuries-old idea, it’s actually one that is quite applicable to today’s job market, in which skilled workers are harder than ever to find. According to the Department of Labor (DOL), an apprenticeship is a proven approach for preparing workers for jobs while meeting the needs of business for a highly skilled workforce. Apprenticeships are different from other work-based training, including internships, in that apprentices are hired by employers and receive a paycheck from day one. Wages increase


over time as apprentices advance their skills, knowl- edge and abilities. For an industry like the lawn and landscape industry, in which more skilled workers are highly desired, apprenticeships just may be the path to a stronger future. That’s why the National Association of Landscape


Professionals (NALP) is pleased to debut the Landscape Management Apprenticeship Program, a DOL-sanctioned program, designed to help contractors attract men and women looking for on-the-job training and opportunities for career advancement.

What is apprenticeship? “It’s an ‘earn and learn’ oppor- tunity,” says Jenn Myers, director of workforce develop- ment for NALP. “Apprentices will be working full-time and making money while also learning vital skills.
